But where should you start your journey? From the main entrance, located in the Rio Diz Urban Park in the city of Guarda (Guarda Gare) or through the secondary entrance located on the river beach of Albufeira do Caldeirão. From either of these open access portals to the depths of nature, eleven routes await you - nine mountain bike trails and two road routes. In a municipality that is also a sanctuary for migrating and ground-breeding birds, we offer you a free birdwatching program in the Caldeirão Reservoir area (secondary gate and surrounding area). Throughout the year, you can spot and listen to white-faced cormorants or flocks of herons with little effort. In some areas of the great highlands of Beira, don't be surprised if you come across wildlife species such as roe deer, foxes and wild boar. To explore these trails is also to confront man's intervention in nature throughout the ages. The remains you'll find along the way go from prehistoric times to the present day. The most picturesque villages are still filled with houses of typical architecture, with their porches and storage spaces on the first floor. The ancient trails through which the routes pass will take you to two fortifications (Castros) which date back to the Iron Age and have enormous archaeological significance. These include Jarmelo and Tintinolho, classified as a Property of Public Interest and a National Monument, respectively. Religious architecture also emerges in buildings of small scale or monumental proportions, which is the case of the Cathedral in the city of Guarda.(source: www.cyclinportugal.pt/en/2-centros/162-guarda)Facilities and other services: Bike station, changing rooms, self-service repair shop, free bike wash and toilets.
