The privileged location of Guarda gave it a climate superiority that still remains recognized nowadays. The origins of Sanatorium Sousa Martins date back to the late 19th century, period of history in which Portugal began a structured battle against tuberculosis.

In May, 18th 1907, Queen Amélia and King Carlos I inaugurated the sanatorium pavilions, built from the root by the National Assistance to Tuberculosis, according to project by Raul Lino. The building was proposed by the Director of Hospital da Misericórdia of Guarda, Lopo de Carvalho, and immediately accepted by Queen Amélia, as Director of Assistance, supported by Sousa Martins. The complex consisted of 3 pavilions for hospitalization, aimed at different social classes, called Pavilhão Dr. Lopo de Carvalho, Pavilhão António de Lencastre and Pavihão Queen Amélia; they were 3 semi-detached homes for patients who were accompanied by their families, pharmacy, x-ray, laboratory, administration building, laundry and electric power plant; it was recommended for problems of tuberculosis, pleurisia, asthma, anemia and neurasthenia. They are currently classified as a set of Public Interest Real Estates. The National Forest Authority declared the set of centuries-old trees of public interest, of which the giant sequoias stand out (sequoiadendron giganteum).
