The monument is dedicated to Dr Lopo de Carvalho (1858-1922), a doctor (tisiologist) who co-founded the Sousa Martins Sanatorium (inaugurated in 1907, at the same time as the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital). A bronze bust from the first half of the 20th century, depicting the honoured man, stands before the viewer on a tall, sturdy, stepped granite pedestal, with a relief on the front of the pedestal depicting a snake and some plant elements, above which are inscriptions alluding to the honoured man ‘Ao / Dr. Lopo de Carvalho/ Médico / 1858 / 1922’, at www.culturacentro.gov.pt.
