This bovine cattle breed originated in the parish of Jarmelo. It is an autochthonous breed and, among the 7 exhisting "mountain meat" breeds, it is the only one with biological certification.

This breed seems to derive from “Mirandesa” breed and, according to some notable zootechnicians, suffered some changes due to the region of Guarda. It is a very rustic, healthy, strong, and well-fitted breed for milk production. In 2023 this breed consisted of more than 400 cows owned by 30 producers. These figures guarantee the sustainability of the breed which, a few years ago, was almost extinct: in 2007 there were only 23 cows.
