Recent archaeological excavations in this settlement denounce a wide diachrony of occupation of the site. The oldest goes back to the Iron Age, having also been occupied in Roman times. However, it was during the High Middle Ages (centuries V to VII) that it assumed a structuring function of the territory of the Upper Mondego, a group belonging to Visigoth elites, capable of collecting taxes and building a line of walls which are still well demarcated in the landscape.
