The village of Codesseiro, so called because of a certain plant called codesso, was named after a general who visited our highest monument, our watchtower with a 360° view of the municipalities of Guarda, Trancoso and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, among others.

Formerly a municipality, afterwards known as Vila Flor da Beira Alta belonging to the municipality of Jarmelo, the village of Codesseiro was founded 505 years ago and was visited by the King D Manuel I, the Romans and the Celts, and according to a local legend, by Inês de Castro.The village has splendid monuments other than the tower, such as the anthropomorphic graves, a pillory, a cross, a prison, the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Anunciação (Our Lady of the Annunciation) and the public fountains, as well as the community oven.In the adjoining community of Paiviegas we can find monuments such as the São João Baptista chapel, a community oven, the Paiviegas school ( now in ruins) and public fontanaries.In Salgueiro we can find monuments such as the community oven and public fountains. In Gonçalveiros you'll find the ruins of a community oven, the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos and public fountains. In Carvalhal we can also find public fountains, the chapel of Senhora da Saúde and two crosses.The parish of Codesseiro belongs to the municipality of Guarda. It is spread over an area of 9.622 square kilometres and has approximately 160 inhabitants (2021 census).The adjoining villages of Pai Viegas, Salgueiro, Gonçalveiros and Carvalhal are inserted in the parish of Codesseiro.Religious Heritage: The Codesseiro Parish Church, the Chapel of São João Batista, the Chapel of Senhora das Necessidades and the Chapel of Senhora da Saúde.Other historical monuments: Codesseiro Pillory, Codesseiro Tower.
