Initially installed outside the protection of the walls, with the fernandine wars the convent was relocated to the interior of the walled perimeter, to a place called Poço do Alcaide, where Escola de Santa Clara (Santa Clara School) stands till today. The convent, contiguous to the old Porta da Covilhã (Gate of Covilhã), incorporated its tower of protection (probably similar to the Tower of the Blacksmiths, which still exists) that became known as Torre do Mirante because, adapted with large rugged windows on the top, it was used as the nuns' viewpoint for centuries. The demolition of the convent and the fortified complex Porta da Covilhã / Torre do Mirante occurred in the last decades of the 19th century.
