This archaeological site is one of the most emblematic settlements of Protohistory, not only of the entire region but of the entire Iberian Peninsula. Its occupation goes back to the end of the Bronze Age, being attested from the 8th to 6th centuries BC and, by its location, was part of the vast territory of the Lusitans.

Concerning what is known, it would be a settlement, fortified by an extensive wall line implanted at the top of the head, surrounding the houses and a sanctuary. The most spectacular element of the settlement is provided by a famous inscription engraved on a rock, testimony of an ancient religious ritual probably of Mediterranean matrix, practiced on the site and that, in the Classical Era, was still practiced by the Romans who called it suovetaurilia. The cult consisted of the ritual sacrifice of a lamb, a pig and an ox as a form of worship of various deities of the pre-Roman Lusitan pantheon, identified in the inscription.
