Located in the municipality of Guarda, on the limits of the region of Beira Alta, the parish of Vela is situated next to the river with the same name, on an open valley in Serra de Santo Antão, a segment of Serra da Estrela. In terms of hydrology, the Santo Amaro and Amezendinha streams flow in the valleys bearing the same name. The parish is located approximately 15 kilometres from Guarda.
